Garlic breadsticks are always a hit to serve with spaghetti, Alfredo, or pizza. In fact, I think that’s why so many people love Olive Garden…endless breadsticks! (Umm…yes!!)

Here’s what you need:

For the breadsticks

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp fresh minced garlic
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (to oil bowl for dough to rise)

For the topping

  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/8 tsp Italian seasoning

Here’s how to make these delicious breadsticks

In a large mixing bowl add in your yeast and sugar. Then, microwave your water for 30 seconds. You want the temperature to be around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the water into the bowl with the yeast.

Whisk it together and then let it sit for about 8 minutes. This helps the yeast start to activate. It will start to get foamy as you wait.

Combine the minced garlic and the melted butter together. Then, pour this garlic butter into the yeast.

Then, start adding flour, 1 cup at a time. Mixing well after each addition.

After 2 cups of flour has been added, switch to your dough hook attachment. Then, add in the remaining flour.

Once the dough has started coming together, you can knead it 10 times in the bowl. Kneading simply means taking a portion of the dough and fold it in on itself. It helps even out the consistency of your dough.

Shape the breadstick dough into a ball and place it in a well-oiled bowl. I usually put 1 Tbsp of olive oil in a bowl and use a paper bowl to wipe it all around the bowl. This helps soak up any extra and coats the bowl nicely.

Cover the bowl and let it rise for 1 hour. If your oven has a proof setting, you can use this. It keeps the oven warm but not hot enough that the yeast will die.

Once the dough has risen to double it’s size, it’s time to start shaping some breadsticks! This dough will make about 12 breadsticks so you can divide your dough into 12 sections and roll each out.

Then, place the formed breadsticks onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, prepare your breadstick topping.

In a small bowl add in the melted butter, salt, garlic salt, and Italian seasonings. Using a silicone pastry brush lightly mix it together.

Then, brush this garlic butter onto the breadsticks before you cook them and after.

Bake for 16-18 minutes or until they start to look golden around the edges. As soon as they are out of the oven, immediately brush a little more garlic butter on them.
