French toast is always a breakfast favorite, especially at my house. With this recipe, your family will be begging you to make it every morning!

What makes this recipe so special?

Most french toast recipes will call for milk and eggs mixed together and then you dip your bread in it. While that is the basic steps, there's actually a little known secret that you should only use the egg yolks (yellow part).

Don't stop there though, add in some delicious flavorings to really kick your french toast up a notch. I am always adding vanilla extract, cinnamon and nutmeg to mine!

What's the best bread to use?

The great thing about french toast is that you can use any kind of bread. Have a store bought loaf close to its expiration? Use it!

Homemade bread? Definitely!

Breakfast in bed

What I also love about french toast is that it is a perfect dish to serve for breakfast in bed. I really love this serving tray from Thirteen Chefs, and is what's pictured above.

Ingredients needed to make french toast

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 cup milk
  • bread sliced
  • 3 tablespoon butter or oil (for frying)

Tips for making for making French toast

  • Don't use egg white. (This can give your french toast a weird smell).
  • Use a combination of butter and oil in your frying pan. This helps the french toast from sticking.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 cup milk
  • 14 slices bread
  • 3 tablespoon butter or oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg together. Whisk lightly.

  2. Next, add in your egg yolks. Again whisk for one minute. Then, add in your milk. Whisk one last for more another minute.

  3. Place a small amount of butter in a frying pan to melt over medium low heat. Don't put all of it in at once, you want to use a little bit of butter for each batch of cooking.

  4. Then, dip your bread into the egg and milk mixture, making sure to coat both sides.

  5. Then place the dipped bread into the frying pan. Cook each side until golden brown. The first two take about 2 minutes on each side and all the others will go a lot quicker.

Recipe Notes

Only use the egg yolks. Egg whites can give french toast an off-putting smell.
