Signs of teething in a baby and toddler

Teething is a tough time for babies and even toddlers as they are erupting all of their baby teeth through their gums. The big question is how do you know when your baby or toddler is teething? Here is a look at the signs of teething in a baby and toddler:

Signs of teething in a baby

1. Drool…and lots of it

One of the first signs of teething in a baby is drool. It might start off as a small amount, but only increases the older they get and the more teeth they are trying to push through their gums. You will notice their outfits might start getting saturated with drool in the front, so keep an eye out for that.

2. sucking on everything

Another one of the signs of teething in a baby is that they will start sucking on their hands/fingers. It’s fairly harmless, until they actually get a tooth and then they accidentally bite themselves…then you have problem. It really isn’t limited to sucking on their hands though, because anything within grabbing distantce is fair game.

3. Fussier than usual

Babies cry, that’s normal, but one of the signs of teething in a baby is being fussier than usual. If your baby isn’t hungry, he/she has a clean diaper and isn’t sick, then they might just be fussier because of teething. 4. Weird poop

This one goes back to the drool. Sometimes that drool stays in their mouth and they swallow it (not a big deal), and this excess saliva makes their poop a little weird. TMI: with both of my kids, they had an almost mucus-like or slimy residue mixed in with the poop. When I asked their pediatrician, he informed me that it was most likely due to them swallowing an excess amount of drool during…you guessed it…teething!

5. a few teeth nubs sticking out

One of the last signs of teething in a baby is seeing or feeling the first two teeth stick out (it will usually be the bottom center teeth). As they break in those new found teeth, they will start the cycle over again with all their other teeth. My son is just now 7 months old and you can feel them and see them just barely if you look, and pictured above is my daughter when she was about 8 months old with her toothy smile!

Signs of teething in a toddler

1. Fussy or moody

The signs of teething in a toddler are similar to that of a baby, in that toddlers can also be real fussy or moody. It is especially bad when they are getting their 2 year molars. When your toddler is cutting those molars in, that is probably the worst and they let you know it.

2. complain of an “ouchy”

Another one of the signs of teething in a toddler is that he or she might vocalize “ouchy” and point to their teeth. With babies, they can only cry. It does help though, because you know what is bothering them and can help soothe it. Here is a guide on how to soothe a teething baby or toddler for that matter.

3. Naptimes might get screwed up

One of the last signs of teething in a toddler is that naptimes might become more of a struggle. When toddlers are teething, they are going to be a lot more demanding of attention. Again, it’s at the worst time when they are getting their 2 year molars. My daughter was a good napper and sleeper, but when she was getting her 2 year molars, she was like a whole different person. Don’t fret though, after those teeth come in, things seem to go back to normal pretty quickly.

When people think of teething, they mostly think it’s babies who go through this, but even toddler go through teething. If you haven’t yet reached the 2 year molar phase, beware! Just remember that with babies, the signs of teething are: drooling, sucking on their hand, fussier, weird poop and also teeth that start to stick through their gums. Toddler have similar signs of teething in that they are fussy, might complain of an “ouchy”, and naptimes my become more of a struggle.
