What stay at home moms want working moms to know:

This is a letter about what stay at home moms want working moms to know.

Dear working moms,

I know you think we have it lucky, because we are able to stay at home, but heres what you don’t know:

We envy you too! The idea has probably crossed a stay at home mom’s mind a million times about going back to work. The thought of taking our child to daycare, and rejoining the workforce has great appeal when you are home all day long. Not to mention a lunch break where you actually get to eat/pee in peace.

cherish those Conversations with other adults

Another thing stay at home moms want working moms to know is that you should cherish those conversations with other adults. The most interaction a stay at home mom gets with another adult is when their husband gets home, unless she bravely decided to take the kids somewhere (which she probably doesn’t do much).

Stay at home moms miss getting to have co-workers and have meaningful conversations with them. The most meaningful conversation I have had as a stay at home mom with my daughter is trying to explain to her that she needs to go potty in the big girl potty. It’s certainly not mentally stimulating by any means. Not only that, when we do finally have conversations with other adults, many times we are using little-kid vocabulary out of habit. Or we word vomit a bunch of things because are so unused to talking with other people our age.

You are lucky you get to look forward to seeing your kids after work

Another thing stay at home moms want working moms to know is that you are lucky because you get to look forward to seeing your kids after work. Don’t get me wrong, it is amazing getting to be home with my kids, but I rarely get that excitement of not seeing them after a long day at work away from them. If I remember correctly, the saying goes: absence makes the heart grow fonder.

We feel guilty

Many stay at home moms, myself included feel guilty about staying at home. While we know we are giving them the undivided attention (most of the time) they wouldn’t get at daycare and we are also saving money, we still feel guilty. When you go from working and helping out financially, to relying solely on your spouse, it is a breeding ground for guilt. Stay at home moms want working moms to know that while we may be lucky enough to stay home, it is not without it’s trials.

As I stated earlier, stay at home moms want working moms to know that sometimes we wish we were you! The biggest takeaway would be to cherish those conversations with other adults, know how lucky you are to be able to look forward to seeing your kids after work, and stay at home moms feel guilty too.

Sincerely,

A stay at home mom
