So, you had a baby? Congrats! Not only were you blessed with your sweet bundle of joy, but also a few extra pounds that are stubbornly sticking with you. With these 5 tips to lose the baby weight, you can finally do it!

1.Ditch the maternity clothes asap

Maternity clothes feel so comfortable and don’t hug your curves, but they can also make you become complacent. With my daughter, I wore maternity clothes for a good year after having her (yikes!). Needless to say, I was complacent that those clothes fit me. I don’t think I ever lost much weight with her, and I didn’t even see it. Looking back at some photos from my trip to Egypt for my brother’s wedding, I was about 10 month’s post-partum and wearing extra-large in clothing. Before having my daughter, I was in mediums. As you can see, that’s a big difference. That is why ditching the maternity clothes as soon as you can is one of the first of 5 tips to lose the baby weight.

After having my son, I tried to stop wearing maternity clothes quickly. This helped immensely because nothing helps give you motivation like that of tight-fitting clothes that once fit.

2. Find time to exercise

Finding time to exercise as a mom can seem impossible, but it doesn’t have to be if you use a few of my techniques. I know they work because I am a mom of a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old.

  • Exercise with your kids

    -I turn some of my favorite music on and start dancing with my 2-year-old daughter. While I am dancing, I also make it a point to do squats, and lunges or I hold my daughter and dance (arm workout for sure as she is almost 30 pounds). Another reason I like this method is that it can help tire my daughter out so she goes right to nap or bedtime depending on when you are exercising.

  • Go to the Zoo

    -This is a fun activity for kids as they enjoy seeing the animals, but it also involves a lot of walking. It is also a good idea because it doesn’t feel like structured exercising which is a definite plus when you are struggling to find motivation.

Finding the right time to exercise is key to actually exercising. I have found that when it comes to working out, sometimes it is just easier when the kids are asleep. If this is you, wake up early or work out when they are sleeping/napping. Just remember, that this is an important part of the 5 tips to lose the baby weight.

3. Change Your Diet

Whether you are breastfeeding or not, you still need to change your diet. You are no longer pregnant, so the amount of calories you need is lower. That being said, you have also lost your excuse, “eating for two”. This was a big thing to me, because with both my pregnancies I had a hard time gaining weight due to hyperemesis gravidarum (click here to read the full story), so I pretty much ate whatever I could and didn’t really care about how healthy it was. Unfortunately, this habit followed me post-partum.

Also, remember to feed yourself. As a mom, I know how easy it is to skip meals, or grab an unhealthy snack instead of sitting down and eating a meal. A lot of times, I would simply skip a meal and then eat a bunch more at dinner time, but ideally, dinner time should be your smallest meal. If you still can’t find the time to sit down, prepare some healthy snacks in advance so you don’t just grab the bag of chips. A few ideas of that would be:

  • baby carrots
  • homemade trail mix: dark chocolate chips, pretzels, and peanuts
  • bananas
  • fresh strawberries

4. Set Attainable Goals

It’s hard to work at a goal that you haven’t set for yourself, or worse yet a goal that is too unrealistic. Make a list of goals that you can achieve in a week, a month, 3 months, and 6 months. This way, you can see what you are accomplishing while also knowing what long-term goals you would like to strive to reach.

5. Reward Yourself

The last of the 5 tips to lose the baby weight is rewards! (Yay!) When you have reached a goal, reward yourself. Here’s the deal: rewards are beyond helpful. It gives you an incentive to keep working on those goals. Some rewards that I like are:

  • A new workout outfit

-What better motivation to keep working out than a cute new pair of yoga pants and a tank!

  • A new outfit for whenever

-The same basic theory applies, that it helps motivate me to work out because I can purchase new clothes that fit me especially after losing some weight.

 

  • Chocolate

    -Because who doesn’t love chocolate? Just remember not to go overboard.

The main idea here is to splurge on something for you. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just something to help keep you motivated.
